When will the tax refund come?
Tax refund is the money you get back from the Swedish Tax Agency if you have paid too much in provisional tax or reduced your taxable income, for example through deductions for travel or double accommodation. The most common reasons for getting a tax refund is because you have interest deductions or uneven income and have not adjusted.
Date of the tax refund 2019
- For those who declare in the app or via the e-service without changing or adding anything by April 2.
- For those who declare in the app, via the e-service, telephone, SMS or on paper no later than May 2.
- For those who take the help of an accounting firm and declare by June 17.
- For those who do not have tax registration in Sweden or have not been notified of your final tax before.
Note that it is both how you declared and how complicated your tax return is that determines when the tax refund is paid out.
When and how do you know if you get a tax refund?
Your tax refund (or your withholding tax) is shown in the final tax notice that comes with the payment.
A few weeks before the refund (2019: March 19) you can log in to the Swedish Tax Agency with e-identification. If you have a digital mailbox, you can view your tax statement and approve your tax return digitally with Bank ID.
You can then also use the Swedish Tax Agency’s app to see your tax calculation.
Bank account and tax account
In order to get their money on time, it is important to report the bank account to which the money is to be transferred. You can do this on the Swedish Tax Agency’s website or in the app.
If you are late in registering a bank account, the money remains in the Swedish Tax Agency’s tax account service. Once your bank account is registered, you can request a payment from your tax account.
If you want the tax refund to be paid out with a debit card, you must contact the Tax Agency.
If the amount is less than 100 USD, the money is not paid out but remains (with interest) in your tax account with the Swedish Tax Agency.
To get your tax refund as early as possible (in April) you need a digital mailbox. In this you can get messages from the Swedish Tax Agency and other authorities.
You can choose from several different services for your digital mailbox. Some of them also handle letters and bills from companies. Read more on the Swedish Tax Agency’s website .
How is the tax refund calculated?
Tax refund or withholding tax depends on whether it is plus or minus in your tax account with the Swedish Tax Agency. If you have paid in too much, you will receive a refund, if you find money you are subject to withholding tax.
The reason for receiving a tax refund may be that the employer has paid more than necessary in the provisional tax. It can also be a matter of reducing their taxable income, for example through deductions for travel or double accommodation.
You can use the tools yourself on the Swedish Tax Agency’s website or in their app to make your own calculation in advance of how much money you can get back. But then you have to fill in all the information yourself (unlike the pre-printed form that is available when it is time to declare).
The Swedish Tax Agency’s tax calculation program is sometimes also called test declaration.
What happens if I have debts with Kronogden?
